Oblacinska

Oblačinska sour cherry is native Serbian domestic variety, discovered as a spontaneous population in the village of Oblačina near Niš. Due to its exceptional and uniform fruit quality, high dry matter content, and perfect suitability for mechanical harvesting, it is the most economically important and most widely grown industrial sour cherry variety in Serbia, as well as one of the most highly valued in all of Europe.

It is a fully self-fertile variety. No need for other pollinator varieties. It flowers medium-early.

The tree is naturally low to moderately vigorous. It forms a distinctive, lower-growing, very dense, and rounded canopy. It enters the fruiting stage exceptionally early, as early as the second or third year after planting. It produces regular, extremely abundant, and very stable yields. Due to its tendency toward overcropping and a dense canopy, it requires regular and specific pruning in order to thin and improve light penetration inside the crown.

It ripens in early summer, in late June and early July, most commonly between June 20 and July 1 under Serbian growing conditions.

Harvesting takes place in late June and during the first half of July. Due to its uniform ripening and high fruit firmness, it is one of the leading varieties fully adapted to mechanized harvesting using dedicated tree shakers and harvesters.

It has poor fresh storage potential after harvest, around 3–5 days. Due to its ideal sugar-to-acid ratio, dark juice color, and high dry matter content, it is a universal premium industrial variety. It is widely used for deep freezing, especially as pitted frozen sour cherries, as well as for the production of juices, syrups, jams, liqueurs, and compotes.

The fruit is small to medium-sized, with an average weight of 3–3.5 g, uniform, and regularly round in shape. The skin is thin, glossy, and at full maturity intensely dark red to deep burgundy in color. The flesh is dark red, exceptionally firm, compact, and fleshy, and very juicy. The juice is intense red and rich in soluble dry matter. The taste is pleasantly acidic, refreshing, and highly aromatic. The stone is small and separates very easily and cleanly from the flesh, making it ideal for mechanical pitting.

It is characterized by excellent resistance to drought, winter frosts, and low temperatures during flowering. On the other hand, it is highly susceptible to cherry leaf spot, Blumeriella jaapii, and blossom Monilinia, which requires mandatory, professional, and regular preventive chemical protection immediately after flowering and immediately after harvest in order to prevent premature leaf drop.

The root system is exceptionally strong, fibrous, and well branched, and is very well adapted to poorer and drier soils. It naturally forms a large number of root suckers.

Our sour cherry fruit trees are produced exclusively as trained and selected own-rooted shoots, in order to ensure complete compatibility, long orchard life, and prevent tree decline.
